- [Annapolis, Md], Aug. 30, 1946. Lieutenant Commander Charles William Gunnels, Jr., U.S. Navy receives the Distinguished Flying Cross from Admiral Chester William Nimitz. He delivered the last bomb dropped by U.S. Navy on Japan during World War II. He had led a squadron for this purpose and was the only flyer to penetrate the Japanese air defenses. Gunnels was born in Washington County, Georgia and graduated from Tennille High School in 1935. In 1941 he graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy. In 1948 he received an advance degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His wife, Mrs. Phyllis O'Brien Gunnels, is seen with him at the ceremony.
