- Description:
- Sandersville, April 26, 1916. Veterans of the Civil War gather for this photograph on Confederate Memorial Day in front of the Masonic hall. The building, built circa 1855-1856, was located on Haynes Street at the southwest corner of the square. Thomas Harris Sparks is the man with the drum. During the Civil War he served as a drummer in Co. B, 59th Regiment Georgia Volunteer Infantry. The drum had been made for him by a man in Warthen, and Mr. Sparks' name was carved on it. During a battle Mr. Sparks had to flee and left his drum behind. Years later, a man from New York advertised in an Atlanta newspaper for relatives of his because he had the drum and wished to return it. Mr. Sparks' son saw the ad, told his father, and the drum was returned. This is a glass negative.
