- LaGrange, 1895. Sarah Coleman Ferrell (1817-1903) poses for a photograph in the gardens at her home. In 1835 she married Blount C. Ferrell. Their home was probably built in the early 1840s. Mrs. Ferrell planned and planted the gardens which were quite famous. They showed an Italian Renaissance influence and were known as Ferrell's Gardens or The Terraces. Her husband died in 1908 and about four years later Fuller E. Callaway, Sr. purchased the estate. The home was removed and a Roman villa was constructed which complemented the gardens. The home of the Callaways is known as Hills and Dales.
