- ca. 1860. Lewis Lawrence Griffin, the founder of Griffin and the man for whom it is named. He was born in South Carolina in 1794 and died in Aberdeen, Miss. in 1867. He served in the Ga. militia; was a businessman, banker, railroad man. He purchased about 800 acres of land and laid out the city with land reserved for schools, churches, parks, other public use.
