- McDuffie County, Feb. 14, 1978. McDuffie County Sheriff William Swan seen inside a DC-7 airplane that ran out of fuel and landed at the McDuffie-Thomson Airport. The airplane contained 21 tons of marijuana that had been smuggled in from Colombia, South America. The smugglers abandoned the airplane and escaped by stealing a private airplane. The confiscated marijuana was said to be worth $21 million on the street.
