- Description:
- McDuffie County, ca. 1901-1902. Young black man standing beside what is said to be a stamp mill mortar used by Jeremiah Griffin in 1833. Griffin had purchased some land in what is now the northern part of McDuffie County where gold had been discovered ca. 1823. He is said to be the inventor of the stamp mill and to have erected the first stamp mill in the U.S. He put the stamp mill into operation in 1833 at the Columbia Mine, a gold mine. The stamp mill which was powered by water allowed him to significantly increase his production of gold. Ores had previously been stamped by hand.
