- Hawaii, ca. 1944. Rear Admiral Richard E. Hawes standing beside his Llewellyn setter, Della, aboard his Navy ship. He was born in Thomson, Georgia and attended the University of Georgia and Mercer University before enlisting in the Navy in 1917. During his career of 36 years, he received the Navy Cross twice and the Bronze Star. He commanded the U.S.S. Pigeon, a minesweeper; the U.S.S. Chanticleer, a new type of submarine rescue ship which he helped to design and build; and the U.S.S. Antheadon. He died December 29, 1968 at the age of 74 at his home in Thomson, Georgia.
