- McDuffie County, Sept. 5, 1976. Dignitaries gather for the dedication of the cabin where Thomas Edward Watson (1856-1922) was born. The pine log cabin was located about three miles from Thomson and was the home of Watson's grandfather, Thomas Miles Watson. Among those attending are the following: U.S. Senator Herman E. Talmadge, sitting at the left and holding a dark notebook; Randall Evans, Junior, a judge on the Court of Appeals of Georgia who was from Thomson, speaking; U.S. Senator from South Carolina Strom Thurmond, sitting second from the speaker's left; U.S. Congressman from the Tenth District of Georgia, Robert G. Stephens, Junior, sitting at the far right.
