- Valdosta, late 1800s. Interior of a classroom at Valdosta Institute located on Central Avenue showing the students seated at their desks. Samuel McWhir Varnedoe settled in Valdosta in November 1865, and reopened the Institute. It was one of the earliest schools offering formal education.
