- Hartwell, ca. 1870. John R. Kay, born in Abbeville County, South Carolina, on June 4, 1828 and died in Hartwell in February 5, 1897. He served in Co. C, 16th Regiment, Georgia Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. Kay was a pioneer settler to Hartwell. He was a carpenter and builder. He built the Hartwell Methodist Church ca. 1859. At that time it was the only church building constructed in town and was shared by several denominations.
