- Shoal Creek community, ca. 1890. Benjamin Shirley and his wife, Katherine Caralyne Latimer Shirley. Mr. Shirley was born August 28, 1814 near Abbeville, South Carolina and died January 17, 1894 in Hart County, Georgia. Mrs. Shirley was born November 1, 1824 in Honey Path, South Carolina and died September 18, 1899. Mr. Shirley was known as "Bottom Ben" due to his ownership of large amounts of bottom land. The couple was married in 1840.
