- Description:
- Gainesville, Sept. 19, 1959. Crowd turns out to view steam locomotive No. 209 on the Gainesville Midland Railroad. It is reported that this locomotive was built for the Czar of Russia until the Russian Revolution in 1917 cancelled the order. No. 209 is seen here on the date that steam locomotives made their final journey from Gainesville to Jefferson, Athens, and Winder before being retired from service. No. 209 was then given to the city. In 1904 the Gainesville, Jefferson and Southern Railroad became the Gainesville Midland Railroad.
