- Gainesville, ca. 1880. Dr. William Clay Wilkes was born in 1819. He graduated from Mercer University in 1843. In 1875 he came to Gainesville to serve as a pastor of the Baptist Church. He was interested in founding a school for young ladies and was able to get local businessmen to join him in raising funds for this venture. In 1878 the Georgia Baptist Female Seminary was founded. Dr. Wilkes was the first president and served until his death in March 1886. In 1900 the name of the school was changed to Brenau College.
