- Gainesville, 1919. Home of Dr. James Henry Downey. He was born Dec. 20, 1864 in Laurens County, S.C. In 1887 he received his medical degree. After several years of practice in South Carolina, he moved to New Holland, Ga. just north of Gainesville in 1901. he became the physician for the Pacolet Manufacturing Company, a textile mill established at this time. In 1904 he took his practice to Gainesville. About 1912 was able to expand on several earlier efforts by building the Downey Hospital located on Sycamore Street. Dr. Downey was a surgeon whose specialty was the treatment of bone fractures. He invented and patented the Downey fracture table, a mechanical device which used suspended weights to facilitate the treatment of fractures. The Downey Hospital is said to have been the first fully accredited hospital in the state. Dr. Downey died Aug. 28, 1937 and is buried in Alta Vista Cemetery.
