- Description:
- Gainesville, 1919. U.S Post Office located at the corner of Washington and Green Streets was completed in 1910. The statue at the left of the building is of Christopher Columbus Sanders (1840-1908). During the Civil War he served as colonel of the 24th Regiment Georgia Volunteer Infantry. He was a prominent member of the community; was involved in banking; and traveled in the Holy Land, giving lectures upon his return. During the tornado which struck the city April 6, 1936, the statue of Sanders was knocked down and broken.
