- New Echota, July 4, 1976. Cherokee Indians leaders and local leaders from Gordon County pose for a photograph behind the plaque dedicating New Echota as a National Historic Landmark. In 1825 New Echota was designated the capital of the Cherokee Nation. It is located northeast of Calhoun.
