- Description:
- North of Calhoun, 1930. View of a statue of a Confederate soldier which makes up part of an arch built of native rock. The arch was constructed to honor the memory of Civil War and World War I soldiers. W. Laurens Hillhouse built the arch for the Calhoun Woman's Club ca. 1925. It is located in a small park at the intersection of U.S. Highway 41 and Ga. Highway 225. A statue to the Indian, Sequoyah, was placed on a pedestal of stone, too. It is located just behind the arch.
2003/06/13: According to Confederate Monuments of Georgia Confederate Burials and Assorted Confederate Information, located online at http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Pines/3093/index.html, this monument is still standing at this location. A marble tablet on the arch reads: "Confederate memorial battle of Resaca fought near here May 14 and 15, 1864." On another plague under the arch is inscribed the following names: "Committee, Mrs. Ernest Beall; Chairman, Mrs. G. G. Harland, Mrs. J. B. Erwin, J. C. Garlington; Mayor, W. L. Hillhouse builder 1927." On either side of the arch are two soldiers, one of which faces south. Under this soldier, the confederate soldier, is a small plague which reads "J. L. Mott Iron Works" and another larger plague which reads "Confederate Memorial." The plague under the soldier facing north reads "Calhoun honors her World War I heroes 1917-1918." - External Identifiers:
