- Brunswick, 1943. U.S.S. Samalness on a trial run. The ship had been built and launched from a shipyard in Brunswick. Mrs. Forest Prather, the wife of the superintendent of the yard, had christened the U.S.S. Samalness. Brunswick shipyards were quite productive during the World War II period when Liberty ships were built. They were large capacity cargo vessels built using standardized parts and prefabricated pieces in order to meet the emergency wartime needs.
2003/06/12: The name Liberty Ship was given to the EC2 type of ships. These ships were built under the Emergency Shipbuilding Plan in order to move men and material to the front lines during World War II. - External Identifiers:
