- Description:
- Jekyll Island, 1911. The club house and apartment house. Note the windmill at right.
2003/06/19: This hotel was first built as a clubhouse, part of the retreat for the "Jekyll Island Club," a social club comprising some of America's wealthiest elites, including the Morgans, Astors, Pulitzers, Rockefellers, and Vanderbilts. The members built cottages for their families to stay in during their vacations. They usually visited the area after the post-Christmas season. In 1942, the U.S. government ordered the area evacuated, and in 1947 the state of Georgia bought the land and built a state park. Many of the cottages have been preserved and are now open to the public. The club house is now a hotel that is open to the public and is a member of the Historic Hotels of America, a program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. - External Identifiers:
