2003/06/12: The "three governor" dispute of 1946 arose immediately after the death of governor-elect Eugene Talmadge (December 1946). Governor Ellis Arnall, Lieutenant Governor M.E. Thompson, and Talmadge's son Herman Talmadge all claimed rights to the governor's seat. The Georgia legislature voted to have Eugene Talmadge serve the term, which he did until the Georgia Supreme Court ruled the election unconstitutional. Thompson won the "dispute" and served as Governor until another election was held. In September 1948, Eugene Talmadge was elected Governor of Georgia. - External Identifiers:
