- "Atlanta, Georgia, corner of Peachtree and Ellis Streets, ca. 1890. Exterior view of the residence of Colonel Robert Flournoy Maddox. Built in 1869 this home was located on the corner of Peachtree and Ellis Streets where the Ritz-Carlton Hotel now stands. Colonel Maddox was a veteran of the Civil War and served with the 42nd Georgia Regiment. Maddox was elected to the Georgia legislature in 1865, later served on the Atlanta City Council, and founded the Maddox-Rucker Banking Company. Colonel Maddox's son, Robert Foster Maddox was born in this home in 1870, had a long and distinguished career of public service, and served as mayor of Atlanta from 1909-1910."--from field notes
