- Atlanta, Dec. 7, 1946. A woman attempting to escape from the Winecoff Hotel fire located at the corner of Peachtree and Ellis Streets. This was the worst fire in Atlanta's history, resulting in the loss of 119 lives and over 100 people injured. The hotel, built in 1913, had been classified as fireproof.
