- Atlanta, May 21, 1917. Great Northside conflagration which started in a stack of mattresses in a structure on Fort Street near Decatur Street which was being utilized by Grady Hospital as a storage warehouse. The fire spread rapidly and burned an area of over 300 acres and destroyed 1938 structures. Property loss amounted to $5,000,000 and 10,000 people were left homeless.
