- Albany, 1952. Dr. Joseph Winthrop Holley and Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune (1875-1955). In 1903 Dr. Holley founded the Albany Bible and Manual Training Institution, an educational facility for blacks. In 1917 the state began to make some appropriations to the school, which gradually increased over the years. This institution has several names until 1943 when its name became Albany State College. Dr. Holley served as its president until 1943. Dr. Bethune founded the Daytona Normal and Industrial Institute for Negro Girls in 1904 in Daytona Beach, Florida. This educational facility is now known as the Bethune-Cookman College. Dr. Bethune served as president until 1942.
2003/02/07: Albany State College has been known as Albany State University since 1996. Other names include Albany Bible and Manual Institute (1903-1917) and Georgia Normal and Agricultural College, Albany (1917-1943). Bethune-Cookman College is still operating under the same name. - External Identifiers:
