- Albany, 1917. Front view of buildings on the campus of what is now called Albany State University. It was founded in 1903 by Joseph Winthrop Holley and was called the Albany Bible and Manual Training Institution. It was for the education of blacks. In 1917 the state began to make some appropriations to the school, which gradually increased over the years. This institution had several names until 1943 when its name became Albany State College.
The photograph was taken by T.E. Waters, who was of 319 Broad St., Albany, Dougherty County, Georgia, at the time that the photograph was taken.
Albany State College has been known as Albany State University since 1996. Other names include Albany Bible and Manual Institute (1903-1917) and Georgia Normal and Agricultural College, Albany (1917-1943). - External Identifiers:
