- Savannah, 1898. Gordon Monument located in Wright Square was erected in 1883 to William Washington Gordon (1796-1842). He was a graduate of West Point; had a law practice; served in the Georgia General Assembly as both a senator and a representative from Chatham County; founded and was the first president of what is today known as the Central of Georgia Railroad system. Gordon County, created in 1850, was named for him.
