- Chatham County, ca. 1930. Florence Martus (1868-1943) was known as "The Waving Girl." She lived with her brother, the lighthouse keeper, on Elba Island, which is located in Savannah River just below Savannah. For 44 years (1887-1931) she waved to ships arriving and departing Savannah. In the daytime she used a handkerchief and at night a lantern.
