- Lawrenceville, April 7, 1911. Lynching of Charlie Hale, a black man, on the courthouse square at the corner of Perry and Pike Streets. Note the sign hanging from his toes: "Please do not wake him." At far left is Jack Mathis, and the boy is Herbert Strayhorn.
