Left to right: Associate Justice T.S. Candler, Blairsville; Presiding Justice W.Y. Atkinson, Newnan; Chief Justice W.H. Duckworth, Cairo; Associate Justice R.C. Bell, Thomasville; Associate Justice T. Grady Head, Ringgold; and Associate Justice J.H. Hawkins, Marietta.
Associate Justice R.C. Bell served as Chief Justice from 1943 to 1946. He was the last person elected by the people as Chief Justice. Since the Constitution of 1945 the Chief Justice has been selected by Associate Justices, usually being the person with the longest tenure on the court.
