Attached news article from the Sweetwater News Enterprise May 19, 1977: West Metro History Highlights - Robert Mable, for whom Mableton was named, married Pheriby Aycock, of Lithonia, in 1837, and they came to Coxes District of Cobb County, which had been created in 1836, to live.
In 1843 he finished paying for 300 acres of land, which he had purchased from Denson C. Melton, of Newton County, and was given a deed dated September 11, 1843, when he started constructing his antebellum home, which stands today on Floyd Road Extension, in Mableton.
Pheriby Aycock Mable died giving birth to their seventh child. Robert then married Almeda Hodge and they had three children.
Robert and both of his wives were well educated for that day and time and he was so determined that his children should have a good education. Therefore, he converted his first log cabin home into a school for his children and other children in the area, charging ten cents a week tuition.
Robert Mable died in 1885 and was buried in his family cemetery back of his home.
His last surviving daughter, Miss Ruth Mable, who never married, continued to teach school in Mableton until early in the 20th Century, and when she passed on she willed the homeplace in perpetuity to three Trustees of the Mable Family Cemetery, which she named, with a stipulation that if any one ceased to perform the duties entrusted to him because of death or otherwise, then, in that event, the other two should name a successor, so that there would always be at least two trustees to administer the trust, which was to keep and perpetuate the Mable Cemetery, by using income from the home and land set aside for that purpose.
Unfortunately, a census of this family was not incorporated in the History of Cobb County, but one will undoubtedly be taken this year and published in The Georgia Genealogical Society Quarterly since several cemeteries in south Cobb County were listed in the 1976 Fall issue."--from field notes - External Identifiers:
