- Fort Gaines, 1905. Student body at the first public school in Clay County poses for a photograph in front of the school. Prior to 1903 the county was served by private schools. This school, located on Jefferson Street, was erected in 1903. Both elementary and high school students attended it. It was used until it was destroyed by a fire in December of 1927.
