- Description:
- "Athens, 1907. Ben T. Epps with his 1st airplane. B. T. Epps, Electric Contractor, Garage at left. Old picture taken in Athens, Ga., many decades ago which shows the first "aeroplane" reputed to have made the first heavier-than-air flight south of the Mason-Dixon Line. Ben Epps Sr. (the late Mr. Epps) is shown beside the aircraft at his old shop in Athens. My uncle, the late Zumpt Huff, was a partner with Mr. Epps in the venture. Before he died he gave me the photo and told me all about the building, testing and flying of the machine. Ben Epps Jr., I understand, operated Epps Field in Athens in recent years and probably still does. Feature stories on the flying venture have appeared in several newspapers, but as far as I know I have not seen a reproduction of the photo. (according to June 10, 1978 correspondence from Don M. Kimsey Sr. of Albany, Georgia) "--from field notes
