- "Bowdon, 1870. Harriet Virginia Colquitt and John Humphries Word. According to History of Bowdon College - Caswell, John Humphries Word was a Civil War veteran and a trustee of Bowdon College. He owned a dry goods store, which opened in 1863 in Bowdon. He employed W. T. Johnson, Sr. at the age of seventeen, when he arrived in Bowdon. (See MS75-074).
