- "Bulloch County, World War I era. Daniel Lawerence Deal in his World War I uniform. Bulloch county's first health officer, and he vaccinated several hundred children. He also served several times in the State House of Representatives. He also was a one term State Senator. Son of John Deal and Susan (McElveen) Deal. Born 2 December 1879 and died 9 April 1955. Married Lillie Zetterower 22 December 1908. Graduated Medical College of Georgia 1908. Practiced medicine in Bulloch for 46 years. Was Statesboro, Ga. and Bulloch County's first health officer and vaccinated hundreds of children and grown ups, too, against smallpox. Served several terms in the Ga. house of representatives from Bulloch Co. and one term as Senator from the first district. Entered U.S. Army July 10, 1918 at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia as First Lieutenant, Medical Corps. Served with General Hospital No. 13, Boulogne, France, British Expeditionary Forces, from October 20, 1918 to January 1, 1919; Vet. Hospital No. 9, St. Nazaire, France, American Expeditionary Forces, from May 6, 1919 to May 26, 1919; Hospital Train No. 64, American Expeditionary Forces, from May 26, 1919 to August 7, 1919. Served as First Lieutenant, Medical Corps, July 10, 1918 to February 17, 1919; as Captain, Medical Corps, from February 18, 1919 to September 4, 1919. Discharged as Major in Officers' Reserves Corps, Medical Corps, U.S. Army. Served overseas from September 23, 1918 to August 20, 1919."--from field notes
