- Cartersville, 1927. Rebecca Latimer Felton (1835-1930). Photograph taken at 505 West Market, now called Cherokee Ave. She was a teacher, writer, lecturer; was secretary to her husband, William Harrell Felton, during his term as U.S. Senator; was active in civic and political affairs. On Oct 3, Gov. Thomas W. Hardwick appointed her to fill his vacancy in the U.S. Senate caused by the death of Tom Watson. She was the first woman to occupy a seat in the U.S. Senate.
