- Macon, ca. 1870. Sidney Lanier at age 28. Lanier was born in Macon Feb 3, 1842. He attended Oglethorpe University and later served in the Confederate Army. He was a poet, linguist, musician, mathematician, and lawyer. He died in North Carolina, Sept. 7, 1881.
