Two-story stuccoed brick building on a brick foundation with basement, featuring battlements and pointed arch windows. Designed by Colonel B. W. Froebel and architects Smart & Lane, the Capitol was built in 1807 by General Jett Thomas. The building was probably completely renovated in 1835. An original cupola with clock was destroyed by fire. Supposedly, a secret passageway underground connects the State House with the Executive Mansion. Secession convention was held in old senate chamber. The building served as Georgia's capitol from 1807 to 1868, when the capitol was moved to Atlanta. Afterward, it became Georgia Military College. The building was destroyed by fire March 28, 1941 and restored according to the plans of Smart & Lane.
