Side view of two-story stuccoed brick house, featuring a portico with entablature supported by eighteen two-story unfluted Doric columns on three facades, built about 1838 for Jerry Cowles, a prominant citizen of Macon. The house is crowned by a cupola and deck and both deck and roof are enclosed by a balustrade. The balcony over the entrance is enclosed by a cast iron railing with arch motif, and balconies with similar railings adorn the wings. The central hall is divided by paired Doric columns supporting an eliptical arch, terminating in a three-story spiral stairway with light coming from the dome above. Twin elongated octagonal rooms in the wings have elaborate plaster decorations. The wings and appendages to the rear combine Italianate and Greek Revival styles. The house was owned successively by Jerry Cowles, Joseph Bond, Samuel Taylor Coleman, Joseph Warren Cabaniss, and B. T. O'Neal. Minor changes were made to accomodate the functions of a private school. Confederate President and Mrs. Jefferson Davis and their daughter Winnie were entertained here at a ball held in their honor in 1887. For more information see Linley, John.
