The oldest part of the house was built in 1825, and columns were added about 1840. House restored in 1916 and present front porch built using columns from Old Whaley place on Prince Avenue. The University of Georgia used it as a dining room. The house was saved from demolition in 1995 and restored by the Athens City Government using money raised through local sales tax.
