- Description:
- Located at: 120 South Clarke Street, Milledgeville, Ga.
Home to eight governors from 1839 to 1869, this square two-story stuccoed brick Greek Revival mansion with a raised basement is sixty feet on each side, has granite trimmed walls, and features a monumental two-story portico supported by massive Ionic unfluted columns and surrounded by a simple entablature. The foyer leads to a central rotunda with a high domed skylight ceiling, and an octagonal room beyond. A circular balcony projects into the rotunda. The salon has been divided into two rooms with a hallway between. The front door is paneled and hand carved, with a silver plated knob and a great key. Finish and plasterwork were restored in 1967. Records of payment to both John Pell and Charles B. Cluskey exist, and it is not known whose design was used. The superintendent of construction was Timothy Porter.
