Two-story wood frame temple type Greek Revival house on a raised brick basement, featuring a two-story portico supported by simplified Doric columns. Floor length first story windows open onto the porch. The front hall is divided by an elliptical arch standing on two fluted Doric columns. Bulloch Hall is distinguished as the former home of Theodore Roosevelt's mother, Martha Bulloch. She was also the grandmother of Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt. Maj. James Bulloch built the house about 1838 from his carefully made plans and superintended the construction himself. His grandfather was Archibald Bulloch, a famous Revolutionary patriot. According to Linley, the building's architect was Willis Ball; however, the Historic American Buildings Survey cites James Bulloch as the architect. For more information see Linley, John. The Georgia Catalog: Historic American Buildings Survey. Athens, Ga.: University of Georgia Press, c1982, p. 319.
