The much renovated structure was originally built circa 1820 and repaired extensively and remodeled after the Civil War. In its original state, the house had a flat roof and a porch with marble columns. Open passageways connected the wings of the building. Subsequent remodels changed the porch and roof and enclosed the passageways. The structure was nearly destroyed by fire in 1937, but was rebuilt in 1939 with a gable roof, dormers, larger windows, and an enlarged southern wing.
