Though the architect is said to be John Marlor (also known as Marler), the naive handling of classic details indicates a less highly trained designer. The house is distinguished by a large dogtrot, which is closed at the rear with adjustable louvers, and curved stairway open to the porch leading to the boys' quarters. The girls' quarters are accessible only through the master bedroom. The first-floor columns of the porch are a version of the Tuscan column, and those on the second-floor are a naive interpretation of the Ionic order. The cornice is decorated with repetitive scallops and holes, which gives the appearance of a classic fret with dentils. The rear view is comparably simple and was perhaps the original front. On one of the bedroom walls are the words, "May all the names engraved here, in the golden book appear," signed by General Judson Kilpatrick and members of his staff, who apparently used the house as headquarters when they passed through the area.
