Rectangular church of handmade red brick with a square wooden belfry. Finger prints on the handmade bricks can still be observed on the exterior walls. Two rows of windows, one above the other, light the interior. A swan copied from the coat-of-arms of Martin Luther tops the belfry. The oldest church building in Georgia, it is sometimes called the oldest public building in the state. This is the only structure that remains of the early colonial town. Of Salzburger and German heritage, the church is known by several names, including the Old Salzburger Church and the Lutheran Meeting House. The church community dates from 1733, organized at St. Anna's Church in Augsburg, Germany. Its first pastors, Johann Martin Boltzius and Israel Christian Gronau, met and joined with their flock in Rotterdam, Holland. From there pastors and congregation traveled to the colony of Georgia as the First Salzburger Transport, arriving in Savannah on March 12, 1734. The church was begun in 1767 and completed in 1769. Jerusalem Church is still a very active congregation and, historically, it is the oldest continuing Lutheran congregation in America worshipping in the same building.
