Side view. Two-story wood frame plantation plain style inn on a stone foundation, featuring a 90-foot porch supported by eight square columns connected by a railing which spans the front of the house. Major Jesse Walton was attacked and killed by Cherokees in 1789 on this site. Two holes in the attic are said to have been used in repelling attacks by Native Americans. The structure was purchased in 1820 by Dr. Devereaux Jarrett, an Episcopal clergyman, who bought the site in 1833 and made it the center of his thriving plantation. In order to accommodate the growing number of travelers to northeast Georgia, he doubled the size of the structure. In 1966, Traveler's Rest was recognized as a National Historic Landmark because of its fine architecture, particularly the porch and hand-numbered rafters. For more information, see Linley, John.
