- Description:
- Located at: Visible but not accessible from Georgia Highway 75, two miles south of Helen, Ga. at Georgia Highway 17.
Native American burial site near Helen, Georgia, topped by a Victorian gazebo, that was probably created before the Cherokee Tribe inhabited the area. Excavation between May and October in 1915 unearthed seventy-five burials that took place over a number of years. Differences in artifacts found at different levels of burial indicate change in the culture. Fire pits used at various levels were also found throughout the mound. Many years later the Cherokee Tribe used the Mound as a site for their townhouse and ceremonial rites. Today descendants of those Cherokees known as the "KEEPERS OF THE MOUNDS" take care of the up keep of the mound. The dwellings of the village proper, perhaps numbering 300, were erected in the surrounding flatland near the river. The Mound is on property belonging to the L.G. Hardman Estate, on the grounds of the Nichols-Hardman House. Dr. Hardman was a former Governor of the State of Georgia. In the summer of 1980 the Nacoochee Valley, in which the Mound is located, was placed on the National Register of Historic Places as a historic district.
