Built in 1884 for Chicago shoe merchant Charles W. Lapham, the Victorian house boasts fish scale shingles, oriental-style porch decorations, longleaf pine inlaid floors, and a double-flue chimney with a walkthrough stairway. The house is said to have no right angles or rectangular rooms. At the time of its completion, it featured hot and cold running water, indoor plumbing, its own gas lighting system and built-in closets. The house is now a state historic site.
