Stone headgates and lock on the Augusta canal. Brainchild of Henry H. Cumming, the Augusta Canal was built in 1845 to transform Augusta into an industrial center. By the 1880s the canal supplied power to eight textile mills. Additionally, the waters in the canal also powered the city's water pumping station.
