Multi-storied conference building of brick, concrete and steel. The original plans called for five components designed for specific utility for adult education conferences and activities, as follows: sleeping rooms (for 296 people) and three dining areas; twenty conference rooms and exhibit space; a 434 person capacity auditorium modeled after the General Assembly Room of the United Nations building; communications facilities; and staff office space. The Georgia Center for Continuing Education was funded by both the University of Georgia and the W. K. Kellogg Foundation of Battle Creek, Michigan. Stevens & Wilkinson of Atlanta, Georgia, drew the plans for the Center, and deGive, Dunham, and O'Neil was the contractor. George Nelson and Associates was the firm chosen to design the interiors of the building, including furniture, colors, and fabrics. Construction of the Georgia Center's original building began on January 17, 1955. Staff began moving in September 1956, and the first conferees arrived four months later. The Kellogg Foundation's second grant to the University of Georgia, in 1984, included funding for programs at the Georgia Center. Kellogg funding was matched by the State of Georgia to renovate and expand the Georgia Center complex to its present-day configuration. Since 1957, the Center has built its clientele to over 200,000 through on-campus, off-campus, and distance education programs, and through various support services.
