Named for Dr. Steadman Vincent Sanford, former University president and University System of Georgia chancellor, the original 1929 stadium cost $360,000, was constructed with convict labor, and seated 30,000. There were several more alterations to the structure. In 1940, Lights were erected on the field level. In 1949 seating was added to the South Stands bringing stadium capacity to 36,000. Seating was again increased in 1964 when another 7,621 seats were added to the end zone. In 1967, the addition of a second deck of seating greatly increased the stadium's capacity. In 1981 and 1991, the east and west ends of the stadiums were enclosed and in 1982, lighting was improved. In 1994 the Lettermen's Club was added and between 1994 and 2000, 50 SkySuites and SkyClub rooms were built on.
